dc.description | Emergency preparedness has to do with the capability of maintaining protection and safety by managing accidents, mitigating their consequences if these do occur; protecting the health of site personnel and public, and protecting the environment. While Emergency response ensure the performance of actions to mitigate the consequences of an emergency for human health and safety, quality of life, property and the environment. The objectives are of the following: Mitigate accident at source, Reduce risk of serious deterministic health effects (deaths) Keep acute dose below health effect threshold, and reasonably reduce risk of stochastic effects (cancer). Emergency preparedness helps to build confidence that an emergency response would be managed, controlled and coordinated effectively. The main objectives of On-site Emergency plan are to ensure: Plant control and safety, Warning and providing information to the public authorities on the development of the accident and on its impact on the environment, Emergency aid for any site causalities, Protection for site personnel, i.e. its evacuation or distribution of stable iodine if necessary, and Information for the media. While the main objectives of an off-site emergency plan are: To protect the neighboring population should they become threatened, To provide, if necessary, the operator with offsite support resources, and To inform the public and media. Nuclear Accident, Exposure Pathways, Where Accident Can Happen, Why accidents happen, Planning Categories, Planning/Threat Categories, Emergencies at Nuclear Installations, Emergency Planning Zones (EPZs), Emergency Response Areas, Protective Measures during Nuclear Emergencies (1 of 2), Protective Measures during Nuclear Emergencies (2 of 2), Sheltering, Iodine Thyroid Blocking, Evacuation, and Responsibilities of the Operator were also discussed in this presentation. | en_US |
