Title: Design Extension Conditions and the Concept of Practical Elimination in the Design of Nuclear Power Plants
Authors: IAEA
Keywords: Nuclear power plants — Environmental aspects. | Nuclear power plants — Design and construction. | Environmental protection
Issue Date: 2024
Publisher: NNRA Library
Series/Report no.: Specific Safety Guide No. SSG‑88;
Abstract: The objective of this Safety Guide is to provide recommendations for the design of new nuclear power plants on the application of selected requirements 1 INTERNATIONAL ATOMIC ENERGY AGENCY, Safety of Nuclear Power Plants: Design, IAEA Safety Standards Series No. SSR‑2/1, IAEA, Vienna (2012). 2 An ‘early radioactive release’ in this context is a release of radioactive material for which off‑site protective actions are necessary but are unlikely to be fully effective in due time. A ‘large radioactive release’ is a release of radioactive material for which off‑site protective actions that are limited in terms of times and areas of application are insufficient for protecting people and the environment [1, 2]. 3 For a definition of the term ‘practical elimination’, see the Definition section at the end of this publication.
