Abstract: COMMUNICATING NUCLEAR INFORMATION IN NIGERIA The presenter talks about the establishment of Nigerian Nuclear Authority Regulation which was formed by Nuclear Safety and Radiation Protection Act of 1995 in 2001 with the responsibilities for nuclear safety and radiological protection regulation in Nigeria. The Authority amongst others have power to provide training, information and guidance on nuclear safety and radiation protection {Section6 (g) of the Act}. This seminar further explains the word communication. Communication is then defined as the exchange of thoughts, messages or information, as by speech, visuals ,signals, writing and behaviour. And the types of communication include Verbal Communication, Non-Verbal Communication, Intra and Inter Personal Communication and Mass communication. It also talks about the precaution to be done if an object is radioactive sources which are: Do not touch or pick it up, Keep away from it–30meters, Keep other people away from it, If you have touched it, been near it or near someone who may have touched it, keep your hands away from your mouth and wash your hands before you eat, drink or smoke. Nuclear communication Improves safety by providing information about nuclear technologies, educate people on how to avoid unnecessary exposure to radiation, it Keeps the society informed about safety standards set and how they are enforced, maintain social trust and confidence that nuclear technology is being operated at appropriate safety standards. The seminar concluded that Communicating “nuclear” is no doubt a challenging task nevertheless, people need to understand the benefits and dangers of nuclear science and technology and the role of NNRA in ensuring nuclear safety and radiation protection in the country.
